WSHS Students Speak at Mental Health Event

September 29, 2025

The Hope Squad may be a new club at Winona Senior High School, but the students involved are already making an impact in the community.

Several Hope Squad members spoke earlier this month at “Bringing Light into Darkness,” an event hosted by Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center that highlights mental health resources in the community.

Five students in the Hope Squad — Rose Fabian, Riley Grinsteiner, Marina Narvaez, Charlie LeGere and Sierra Porter — spoke during the event.

“A number of people spoke with me afterwards and said how impressed they were with the students,” WSHS teacher Dwayne Voegeli said.

Hope Squad is an evidence-based, peer-to-peer suicide prevention program for kids in grades 4-12. The NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Winona Affiliate is helping get the club started.
