Walk4Hope raises awareness for suicide prevention
September is suicide prevention month.
Hope4Utah hosted its annual Walk4Hope in Provo to honor those affected by suicide. The Provo community gathered together to raise awareness about suicide prevention.
Greg Hudnall was a high school principal in Provo who lost five students to suicide. That experience inspired Hudnall to do everything he could to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
He organized the annual walk-for-hope in Provo.
“We bring together people from throughout the community—from those who have lost family members, friends, or coworkers to suicide, to those who want to learn more and help prevent it,” Hudnall said.
Hudnall said knowing the warning signs can help people recognize when someone may be struggling.
“The more educated we are about warning signs and risk factors, the more likely we are to recognize them and get help,” Hudnall said.
Wasatch behavioral executive Scott Taylor said help starts with open conversations.
“Some people are afraid to say the word “suicide” because they think talking about it might encourage suicide. But the research is very clear: that isn’t the case.”
Provo mayor Marsha Judkins said this message is important for our community.
“There is far too much suicide in Provo and Utah. We need to do everything we can to try and help,” Judkins said.
Organizers said an important step is making sure people feel comfortable asking for help.
“People should feel that it’s okay to reach out for help and tell others how they’re feeling. We really need to start talking about it more,” Judkins said.
“We can all help save lives, and we can all make a difference,” Hudnall said.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available 24/7. Call or text 9-8-8 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
