The Spearfish Middle School Hope Squad was nominated by the Lead-Deadwood Middle School Hope Squad to take part in the USC Speak Your Mind Ice Bucket Challenge. The Spearfish squad conducted their challenge in Spearfish Creek on May 7 and nominated Harrisburg Middle School for the USC Speak Your Mind Ice Bucket Challenge.

The Hope Squad Program is a suicide prevention model that connects gatekeeper training, psychoeducation, a peer-to-peer approach, and community engagement to reduce the risk of suicide.  The Hope Squad is a group of students nominated by their peers. They meet bi-monthly with trained advisors to talk and learn about mental health. Members are trained to note signs of distress and reach out, connecting peers to help and hope. Hope Squads educate the entire student body to reduce the stigma and change their school’s culture.
