The Helpline Center is proud to announce an impactful in-person event featuring Emma Benoit, a nationally recognized mental health advocate and subject of the documentary My Ascension. This free event will take place in Watertown on Tuesday, November 18 at the Watertown High School from 6:30 – 8:00pm. This is part of the Helpline Center’s efforts focused on mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

My Ascension chronicles Emma’s journey following a suicide attempt at age 16 that left her paralyzed. Her story is one of resilience, advocacy, and hope. The film not only highlights Emma’s personal transformation but also shares the stories of two young individuals who tragically lost their lives to suicide, offering a deeply moving and educational experience for attendees.

Following the screening, Emma will speak directly to the audience, sharing her lived experience and her mission to bring Hope Squad, a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program, to schools across the country. Her message is one of empowerment, healing, and the importance of community support. The Helpline Center currently partners with over 20 middle and high schools across South Dakota for Hope Squad.

“These events are designed to spark conversation, build awareness, and offer hope,” said Janet Kittams, Helpline Center CEO. “Emma’s story is a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is a path forward—and we don’t have to walk it alone.”

This event is made possible through the support from The 437 Project, a statewide fundraising initiative that champions mental health and suicide prevention efforts across South Dakota. This year’s The 437 Project took place from September 25-28, 2025. For more information on this event and to register, visit www.helplinecenter.org/emma or call 211.
