Celebrating School Administrators: Building the Systems That Help Hope Squad Thrive
Length of reading time: 4 minutes
Student-led, adult-supported and community-owned. This is a simple yet powerful recipe for a thriving Hope Squad.
Students bring peer connection and leadership to life, but school administrators help create the conditions for that impact to last. By supporting Advisors, integrating Hope Squad into schoolwide priorities, and connecting students with trusted adults and community resources, administrators help build a culture where student well-being is everyone's responsibility.
Let's explore how school leaders can support a systemwide approach to student well-being—and how Hope Squad can help.
The leadership behind a thriving Hope Squad
Hope Squad is more than a group of students. It is a schoolwide approach to building connections, strengthening peer support, and creating a culture where students and adults know how to respond when someone is struggling.
Students are at the heart of that work, but they do not do it alone.
School administrators create systemwide conditions for that impact by championing the program, supporting Advisors, and prioritizing a culture where every student knows how to connect with others and where to turn for help.
Although school administrators may not always have the same amount of 1:1 time with students, they have a unique opportunity to shape their success.
These school leaders play a foundational role in creating the structure, support, and stability that allow Hope Squad to become part of the fabric of a school.
From selecting and supporting Advisors to creating time for the program and connecting with community resources, administrators turn the approach into a reality that gets stronger every year.
When it comes to an impactful Hope Squad at your school:
- Your administrators lead the system
- Your Advisors lead Hope Squad Members
- Your student body brings the culture to life
Champion the vision
One of the most powerful things an administrator can do for the whole school and broader community is to champion Hope Squad and make the vision clear.
When leaders understand that Hope Squad is not simply a student group but part of a transformational approach to student well-being, they can naturally connect the program to the decisions and priorities already shaping their school.
Here are some ways that administrators can be especially influential during the early stages of implementation:
- Identifying the Advisors who will lead Hope Squad
- Understanding the peer-nomination process
- Attending the parent meeting
- Introducing Hope Squad to the whole school
- Designing the launch timeline
- Forming relationships with community partners
- Establishing referral pathways that are clear and easy to follow
When administrators champion implementation, students and staff see Hope Squad not as just another school program, but as the benchmark in a connected, supportive school community.
Empower your Advisors
Hope Squad Advisors are the adults who work most closely with Members, but administrators still play an essential role in success even if it’s behind the scenes.
Selecting the right Advisors, communicating training expectations, and providing appropriate time and resources enable them to lead the program successfully and make a real difference.
Each Advisor completes Hope Squad training and is encouraged to complete gatekeeping training as well. Administrators can create the time and space for Advisors to complete these trainings, and then to put what they’ve learned into practice.
When Advisors have the support they need, they can focus on what they do best: Empowering students to grow as leaders and share hope with their peers.
Connect the pieces
Administrators have a unique view of the larger school and community.
Hope Squads complement multiple systems surrounding student well-being, including mental health and suicide prevention efforts, referral pathways, and Tier 1 schoolwide prevention initiatives. Administrators can use their insight to integrate Hope Squad into the systems and regulations that may already be in place.
Aligning Hope Squad with existing schoolwide initiatives can strengthen the impact of the systems already supporting student well-being.
Administrators can expand the network around students by building relationships with mental health providers and community organizations. These connections ensure Hope Squad is part of a broader culture of care and that students and families know where to turn when additional support is needed.
Invest in the future
The impact of Hope Squad extends well beyond a single group of Members or a single school year.
Thoughtful planning by administrators creates continuity even as Advisors, students, and administrators change. Consider how new Advisors will be selected and trained when necessary, how the program will be supported over time, and how Hope Squad can remain connected to your school’s ongoing priorities.
These decisions may not always be visible to students, but they will feel the results. By creating stability, Hope Squad becomes a system that lasts for a lifetime.
A foundation for sharing hope
Hope Squad gives students a meaningful role in supporting their peers, but its impact is not limited to the students who have the title of Hope Squad Member.
It’s about creating a school community where every student feels connected, knows how to recognize when a peer may be struggling, and understands how to connect one another to trusted adults and resources.
School administrators make that possible by championing the program, connecting it to the wider community, investing in its success, and supporting the adults who guide it.
To our Hope Squad administrators: Thank you for building the foundation that helps students share hope, strengthen connections, and make a difference in their communities. Your leadership creates the conditions for Hope Squad—and students—to transform the whole school from the inside out with help and hope.
