Back-to-School Checklist: The Supplies Every Connected Campus Needs
Class schedules have been finalized. The hallways have been cleaned. Bulletin boards are fresh, and backpacks are ready to go. The first day of school is right around the corner.
But as schools post their supply lists and get ready to welcome students back into the building, there’s another checklist that Hope Squad recommends every school review: One that results in every student feeling connected, supported, and confident about where to find help.
Research shows that a sense of belonging is one of the strongest protective factors tied to student wellbeing and suicide prevention. In fact, students who feel connected to their peers, teachers, and school communities experience better academic outcomes, stronger mental health, improved attendance, and are more likely to seek help when they need it.
That kind of connection doesn’t happen by chance. Like any element of a successful school year, it happens when there is a plan in place.
As you prepare for the year ahead, take Hope Squad with you and check these essentials off your list–but only if you’re ready to inspire deeper connections in your school community and change the culture from the inside out.
✅ A welcome plan for every student
The first few weeks of school can shape how one student feels about the entire year.
Returning students may be excited to reconnect with friends, but new students–and even familiar faces entering a new grade or new building—can easily feel like outsiders. While greetings from teachers at the doors can be impactful, there are other ways to build belonging that lasts beyond a friendly hello.
When schools intentionally create opportunities for students to build relationships with one another, students are more likely to find a real sense of community. Hope Squad gives schools a roadmap to build these kinds of connections from day one.
Through peer-led activities, schoolwide events, and new-student outreach, Members naturally pave the way to meaningful relationships between their classmates and connections with trusted adults.
Rather than leaving belonging to chance, Hope Squad gives schools an action plan that helps every student find a place—it’s a powerful way to create lasting change.
✅ Support for the students who support others
Every school or friend group has them.
The student whose friends naturally seek them out after a tough day, during a conflict, or when life feels hard. These natural helpers often carry more than anyone realizes.
Without guidance, these students often feel responsible for solving problems they never were meant to carry alone. Without proper training, these friends may not understand the difference between supporting a friend and taking on too much.
By adopting Hope Squad, schools empower these students with confidence and less stress. Our peer-nomination process identifies these natural leaders across the school and equips them with practical skills to recognize concerns, maintain healthy boundaries, and connect friends with trusted adults.
These Members are supported by Hope Squad Advisors who intentionally check in and ensure those who support others receive enough support themselves.
✅ Clear pathways to help
Schools are equipped with caring counselors, psychologists, social workers, and staff members.
But the reality is, not all students know who these people are. And even if they do know who these professionals are, they may not feel comfortable approaching them when it matters.
One of the biggest barriers to getting help isn’t a lack of resources—it’s not knowing how to access the help or being afraid to take that first step.
Hope Squad makes these pathways to help and hope visible. As Hope Squad Members make themselves known to their peers, they also send the message that asking for help is a sign of strength—not weakness.
The result is increased awareness, greater confidence in accessing support, and a stronger referral pathway that benefits the entire community.
✅ Students looking out for each other
It’s not always obvious who is struggling.
While some students may show clear warning signs, others may quietly withdraw or mask what they are experiencing. In some instances, students may appear okay to adults but display subtle signs that only a friend would notice.
Because of this, peers are often the first to notice changes that adults don’t see.
Hope Squad expands a school’s network of support by empowering students to recognize warning signs and connect peers with trusted adults before concerns escalate to become a crisis.
Our program evaluation consistently measures an uptick in Members' confidence when it comes to identifying concerns, referring peers for help, and knowing how to access support.
Most importantly, Hope Squad creates more opportunities for early intervention, making it a shared responsibility rather than one carried only by counselors, teachers, or administrators.
✅ A year-round commitment to well-being
Mental health should not only become part of the conversation during an awareness month or after a tragedy.
Just as schools reinforce academic learning throughout the year, reinforcing mental wellness, connection, and help-seeking is equally important. When students feel mentally strong and resilient, they are more likely to succeed in academics.
A positive school climate is built through everyday moments, not one-time assemblies.
Hope Squad provides schools with ready-to-use lessons, campaigns, activities, and awareness events that keep mental health visible and part of the conversation year-round. This way, Members naturally weave well-being into everyday school life.
Connection takes planning
School supplies help students succeed academically. A connected school community helps them thrive emotionally. Why not fill a school building with both?
Just as schools wouldn’t dream of beginning the year without calendars and lesson plans, we encourage all schools to include a strategy for student connection.
The strongest schools don’t just react to mental health challenges. They proactively create environments where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to seek help before it becomes an emergency.
By building a culture of belonging, strengthening peer connections, and making help visible and accessible, Hope Squad can help schools lay the foundation for a healthier, safer school community.
The most important item on your back-to-school checklist shouldn’t be something students carry in their backpacks; it’s the relationships they build once they walk through your doors.
